Digital noise reduction removes background noise, hiss, and hum by sampling a small section (figure 43) of the sound file, where there is no music, only background noise. It analysis the noise and then replaces it with quiet, inaudible tones throughout the entire sound file, after the entire sound file is highlighted.

Figure 44 : The noise reduction effect is applied to the highlighted section of the wave file.

Noise gates turn on during the music, and off in between the notes, letting the noise through during the music. Digital noise reduction is by far superior to the noise gate, because it removes the noise throughout the entire sound file. Unfortunately, these quiet, inaudible tones can be heard if used improperly. (See odd ball sounds page.)
