Noise gates are used to eliminate background noise, hiss, and hum. When the music is playing, the gate is open. When the music stops, in between notes, the gate closes and shuts off the signal. Unfortunately, some background noise can be heard while the music is playing. Digital noise reduction is better, because it takes the background noise out of the entire sound file.
