This effect is similar to a VCF (Voltage Controlled Filter) in those old analog synthesizers. The synths are modulated by LFOs (Low Frequency Oscillators) or triggered by Envelopes Followers. They are mechanical triggering devices. The Wah Wah pedal is controlled manually by foot. This is one of the earliest effect pedals available to musicians in the sixties.
