Lesson 8-Mixing

Normalize Audio

Normalization is probably the most important application used in digital audio recording. The quieter the music is, the louder the volume has to be to hear it. The louder the volume is, the more you turn down the volume, the less background noise is heard. It minimizes the background noise by making the volume of the sound file as loud as possible, without distortion or clipping.

[Right Click] on every track and select [Normalize Audio].

Auto Volume Control

We use this control to turn down instruments during certain parts of the songs to make room for solo sections. The drums and bass are rarely affected because this sounds bad. Although there were sixties bands that would turn up the drums in between the vocal passages. I wouldn’t do it. Rythm Instruments like horns, guitars, and keyboards are all turn down around -3db, or %70 maximum volume.

You may not need to turn them down; it depends on how crowded they are. A Rythm guitar in the right speaker and one in the left speaker, and a solo guitar in the center may not need attention. AC/DC does it all the time. But A lead guitar in both speakers and a rhythm guitar in both speakers sounds so crowded you need to turn down the rhythm section. Most instruments that fall in the midrange are affected. The Bass guitar and drums are more treble and bass, so they get left alone.

Make sure volume and pan, if you want to automate pan, are on the left side.

Push the button.

Zoom in and set the four points that control the auto volume.

The volume of the rhythm guitar over time. The lead guitar solo is in the -3db range. In the real world the slopes of the lines would be almost strait up and down.

Point the mouse clicker at each of the four points and give them values. I set the Rythm guitar volume at -9db on the faders. the four points are in order {-9db, -12db, -12db, -9db}

Notice that the Rhythm instruments where turned down (-3db(70%)) to make room for the guitar solo. The guitar solo is the same volume that the rhythm guitar was throughout the rest of the track. Instead of making the solo louder than everything else, we turn down the rhythm instruments to make room for the solo.
