This lesson does not teach anyone how to read sheet music. Most people learn sheet music in Guitar World Magazine or high school band class. Lesson 12 will help teach you the very basic part of writing tablature, witch is a form of sheet music that shows you the fingering of notes on a guitar, rather than the just the pitch of those notes.
Tabledit Software
Open the Tabledit Software program.
Rearrange the items on the screen to help you see the tablature better.
Click inside of the red circle.
- Click on the drum tab.
- Rename the ‘Instrument Name’ to ‘Drums’
- Change the Drum set to a standard set, or your drums will sound fake.
- Click ‘OK’
Move the bar out of the way so you can reach the tablature bar.
This is the play button. It is the most important part of the program. When you rearrange the notes, you constantly go back to the play button to make sure the timing is right.
Right click on the top circle, then select Closed Hi-Hat.
Repeat that 31 times until your screen looks like this.
Right Click on the top circle. Select Kick Drum.
Repeat that until you screen looks like this.
Right Click on the top circle. Select Snare Drum.
Repeat that until you screen looks like this.
Right Click on the top circle. Select Crash Cymbal.
Repeat that until you screen looks like this.
Go to the MIDI menu item, and select ‘Reading List’
select from measure 1 to 4. Push the arrow 2 times.
Add measure 5 to 5. Then Close.
Save the file.
Select the file menu item. Then select export, then select export MIDI.
Click File.
- Name file ‘Drums’.
- Save
Click Export.
You should see this.

Piston MIDI to WAV Software
You should see this.
- select open file(s). Select ‘Drums.mid’
Click Convert!
Change the output format to WAV.
Click ‘Start’

Cool Edit 2000 Software
Open the ‘Drums.wav’ file.
This is what you should see.
Select the ‘Transform’ menu item. Select ‘Amplitude’ Select ‘Normalize’.
Click ‘OK’
Select the ‘Transform’ menu item. Select ‘Amplitude’ Select ‘Dynamics Processing’
Select this Compressor.
Normalize again.
Save this file as ‘M Drums’ The ‘M’ means that this file is ready for mixing.
Save it.
