Reverb is a time delay effect. It is used to simulate the sound of playing in different sized rooms, halls, clubs, etc… Most professional recordings are made in a quiet room with something on the walls to minimize reflections. Using carpet or egg crate foam on the walls, to make the room quieter, is common in semi-professional environments.

Recording vocals and instruments in a room that is dead and has no echo or reverb is preferable, because different effects can be auditioned later. Recording in a noisy room that already has echo or reverb limits your options, because it is permanent and can’t be changed later. This is one of the effects that we use to add a room sound later.
