Lesson 6-Stems-Backups

Export Stems from your Song

This whole process is done after all of the tracks have been recorded. It can be helpful to quickly export individual Tracks from your Song. For instance, you might wish to send the Tracks to someone, to prepare a different mix or remix the Song. You can back up your tracks as individual sound files. You can import these individual files into a different kind of DAW and remix the files.

We are going to export the stems to Back up the files for safe keeping.

It is also important to keep in mind that these stems can be exported to :

  1. Transfer the tracks from the Studio One DAW to the Ntrack DAW
  2. Transfer the tracks back to the Studio One DAW Again

This whole process is done because both DAWs have special plugins or Sound FX that work specifically for that DAW.

The Export Stems feature in Studio One provides an easy way to accomplish this.

It is very important that there is nothing done to the mix when you export your stems. Any sound FX, change in pan (stereo spread <C>), or change in level (Volume) will be added to the stem.

When I export the stems to back up the sound files I don’t put any fx on them. When I export the stems to insert into the Ntrack DAW I include several effects on them.

Export Stems

Notice the yellow buttons on the [Rguitar 1] and [Rguitar 2] tracks. these will be the only stems exported now.

Notice that the Pan is set on <c>. the levels are set to 0db. the Inserts are all empty. I had to change the master volume to -6db because it was distorted when I set it to 0db. Just turn it down until it is no longer distorted.
