Figure 38 : The Leslie Simulator effect is applied to the highlighted section of the wave file.

Leslie rotary speaker systems contain two rotating speakers ; a bass speaker and a treble speaker. As the speakers rotate the pitch appears to change. This sound effect is the result of the Doppler effect. When an object moves closer, it’s pitch appears to raise and when an object goes farther away, the pitch appears to lower. This is the change in pitch heard by a passing police car.

This effect was created in the sixties. It was designed for organ and keyboard players. Many guitar players adopted this sound effect. Jimi Hendrix used one in the studio, and he used a univibe in his live show to simulate it. Today computers and rack units simulate this effect in different ways. Phasersunivibesflangerstremolos, and modulated auto wahs, are all used, in different combinations, to simulate the Leslie rotary speaker sound today.
